How to make a fuel tank for the 1952 Dodge 3/4 T 4x4 M37
Просмотров 3514 дней назад
In this video you will see me discus then show you how I made a fuel tank from a 5 gallon Jerry can. It isn't that hard or expensive to do even cheaper if you have an army surplus Jerry can. The parts you need are a bulk head fitting in my case it was 1/4" inside ID and 1/2" outside then you just need a valve for the fuel shut off that screws in to the bulk head fitting.

(Note: the day after this video was shot Ron came up with the idea of just taking the mechanical fuel pump out of the picture and putting in a fuel pressure regulator for the Dupree electric fuel pump setting it to spec of 3 psi it runs and Idles and revs up perfectly) It has now been one year since I bought this 1952 dodge for parts truck. We have installed 3 different rebuilt carburetors it still sounds like a hit and miss engine. Checked with a vacuum Gauge no leaks. running clean gas not using the original tank. Checked spark it at first puts out a hot blue spark but at each revolution it gets weaker. Last idea and hope is the original coil has gone bad I do have a new replacement. Maybe it could be the condenser has gone bad ...

In this short video we got the M37 running with the new rebuilt distributor and points and new spark plugs waterproof plugs were no good. Then taking a partial set of screw on wire connectors Ron remade them to fit snugly on the distributor so we had no loss of spark and what you see was the result.

No leaks in any lines not radiator hoses or gas lines. Pretty soon it will be ready ...

    Does it rev above idle Larry? It sounds like it's not transitioning from idle to the main jet. Accelerator pump not working or something. Why it the timing set to TDC, shouldn't it be set before TDC? I can't tell what is happening from the video, I'm just musing 😊

    • @LarryDeSilva64

      Exactly timing is set correctly and it does idle and the carburetors have been gone through exhaustively. It does idle and I can accelerate. More hours of work today. What a bear to locate. On closer indoevtiin The first few sparks per cylinder WERE good THEN they went to wesk yellow. Yep it's ignition and just a freak coincidence that the really good spark we always had disappeared at the same time I tried a new float needle on the best carb we had rebuilt. Found the points were fine where we set them. Pulled the rotor cap Tested spark from ignition coil secondary. It seemed plenty hot? Problem with rotor or cap. .maybe. Set up the engine on TDC cyl one Then pulled the distributor. We've pulled and replaced the distributor several times and if you are careful...you get it back installed correctly for cyl#1 compression. We had a new ignition coil to install to rule out an I termittent coil. After all, it's 72 years old! Left the distributor outside and tested each plug wire good with a hot spark After testing the third plug.. BOOM, One cylinder apparently had enough gas fumes to fire. And when it did....away went our CYL #1 top dead center!!@ Now we had to turn the engine over by hand and put air pressure on spark plug hole 1 to see when both valves were closed. THEN we were able to lignin up the distributor drive spade to the oil pump and bolt it in. What a chore. We rebuilt the rotor cap with some newneoprrne washers. Fired up with the test civilian carb. Fired right off...idled pretty good and revved up when I opened the butterfly. We are back in business!!

      Actually we were surprised to see there is no ballast resistor in an M37 (at least in the 50's) So this is why burning out the 24volt ignition coil is pretty easy to do. It's primary has only 6 ohms. So, that's 4 amps in the coil primary . What some THINK is a ballast assemblyvisxactualky a firewall mounted Radio Imterference filter. The radios used were mostly like the GRC9 and PRC HF AM and CW radios. So,very susceptible to ignition noise. .in fact the complete ignition system is both waterproof to 6 feet and completely copper braid shielded. We rebuilt the distributor. But the original coil HAS BEEN good up to now. Hoping to fi d our new coil will get it back either goid ignition

    Hi Larry, not sure if you had a chance to check the timing, spark plugs, and distributor. Sometime distributor needs to be fixed or rebuilt. Check the points in distributor, not sure if you have a point system or is electronic system. Also check to see what is the full pressure before the carburetor. Maybe is not getting enough pressure. Good luck 👍 .

    • @LarryDeSilva64
      @LarryDeSilva64 Месяц назад

      Yes checked all of that. Pretty sure we have it narrowed down to the 72 year old coil.

  • @rondesilva9513

    Yep...it was runningvgreat Saturday after we pitvthe first rebuilt carb on. Its ifle was huntingbup and down...but it was smooth and responded well to the throtgke to speed up and slow backb down. Came back at it Monday and started it.. It was running like this. Apply choke and didnt help. It's not running lean like it was. Went to the OTHER carburetor we rebuilt. Runs exactly the same. Checked manifold vacuum... It's within the normal range. We checked compression in all agsin Same as before cyl 1 and 6 the sane at only 75psi The other 4 are 90-95. At our 5000 ft altitude we should have 7.8:1 compression times our 12.8 psi air pressure. Or 99 psi Of course, who knows how accurate our compression gauge is. At any rate from our other videos, you can see its been running fine with that compression. It literally just dies and hardly responds to throttle butterfly position any more. We went back and checked timing while running Right at 4°BTDC. Moved the timing from 2°ATDC to 8BTDC. NO change The spark from this 24v coil is pretty radical and makes a fat blue spark at the plugs. BUT ,looking closer today. NO , it isn't. The first few sparks ARE fat blue sparks THEN they fslter at mostly faint yellow weak sparks. We rebuilt that distributor with new points and condenser. Only problem it had 2 months ago was weak spark....but I found ot was tge RADIO FILTER built into the distributor body..a 4mfd electrolytic feed through cap. I removed it and ran a new rubber insulated line soldered into the coil 24 volt terminal lug. It was runningvgreat with its hot blue spark. The ignition coils in these distributors are built into the distributor No external wires , not even from the high voltage cone tower . The distributor cap has an insulated spring loaded contact that pushes into tge ignition high voltage tower. So, next is to pull the dist cap Shove a chunk of spark plug wire into the ignition coil tower and see if we get a consistent 1 inch long fat blue sparkle it used to have on every point opening. We can check the ignition coil primary and secondary resistance again. Original coils show 6.5 ohms primary And 14,000ohms secondary. Also need to check the point gap to see if it had slipped any. .a really tight gap will give a wesk spark at speed. Hoping it's just the coil...since we have a new after market one. Pretty discouraging week

      yes it is confusing. They swear up and down its 8x56 mm although it doesn't mic out that way. But a 7.62 X 54R actually fits in the chamber.

    I guess we're just old school Larry, where a man's word actually meant something and was a sign of integrity. Unfortunately, the world has digressed over the last 30 years or so and you really cannot trust anybody anymore. It's all about the mighty dollar and the ends justifies the means. It's just a sad state of affairs in this world.

      Yes it certainly is Gregg. My work means something. I tell you the truth even if it hurts but I am honest about it. There are very few honest sellers. Ron has just gotten some batteries and modules the guy said were good. He gets them 3 are dead and two days later the other 2 died cheap Chinese junk. So its everywhere on EBAY. I have only found 4 suppliers of parts for this M37 and they never give me a bum steer. Me buy anything from ebay nope going direct to suppliers I know.

      yes he told me today he still has slight paralysis in his right arm but they say after the surgery the nerve problems still take time to heal. Thats why he will delay his trip to the Azores where he spends 5 months on vacation. But he is helping me out by rebuilding the carburetor that was messed up.
